Our Hopes and Goals:

“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Cor 10:15

“Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them” Eph 5:11

The very nature of God is Light, a light that exposes ungodly attitudes and actions that hide in the dark (John 1:5, Eph 5:8) . The fundamental biblical characteristic of evil is darkness (Acts 26:18) and the secrecy its provides (Mark 4:22). It is every Christian’s call and duty to expose darkness when it’s found root in Christ’s bride his church (Eph 5:11).

I have ministered in over 100 church disaster over the last 35 years in both direct and indirect roles, and I began seeing about 20 years ago very consistent false theology that was tied many of these disasters together.  In the last 15 years incidences of Spiritual Abuse and Sexual Abuse in the Church have skyrocketed. Although the church has always suffered from these issues, today are growing rapidly because they are often supported and made contagious by subtle but damaging false teaching. The Church in the US is in extreme danger today because seemingly small errors often work together and are very rarely challenged.

The exponential rise of Spiritual and Sexual Abuse in the US Evangelical Church today is one reason why church attendance in the US is plummeting. The Southern Baptist Convention has lost over 1 million members in only a decade. Millennial in the US are avoiding Evangelical Churches in levels never seen before in US history, so much so at this rate the Evangelical Church in the US will almost cease to exist in only 60 years. The divorce rate in the US is higher among Christians than non-Christians, and higher still among Evangelicals. Divorce across many areas of the Bible Belt is almost double the secular population as a whole. I believe the abandonment of Christianity by young people in the US is due in large part by Evangelical Church in allowing so much unrestrained false teaching, . US Evangelicals have utterly failed today to walk in truth, live in love, and share the Grace found only in Christ himself.

I will in this blog often use the methodology of Disso Logio Dialetic to provoke discussion because many Evangelicals consider their many biblical errors beyond refute. Not all the points I make on this blog are positions I support or support fully, but I do this to expose how poorly Evangelical understanding and exegesis is on vast array topics. The Church needs these discussions even if we don’t always agree on their outcomes. This why I ask and pray you read this or ANY theological topics with prayerful discernment with your trust on Christ alone asking the Holy Spirit to guide you, and continue to pray for me for wisdom and truth, and know the perfect will of our Perfect God.

“Ecclesia semper reformanda” (the church must always be reformed, a paraphrase of Augustine)

“Every day, the church is becoming more like the world it allegedly seeks to change.” George Barna, Christian researcher.

“The North American church at present is conspicuous for replacing the Jesus way with the American way.” – Eugene Peterson, “The Jesus Way: A Conversation in following Jesus”

For more detail of recent mega-church disasters, see this article here “Hard Times at Harvest”.   Its unlikely Harvest will survive, and Willow Creek and Sovereign Grace Churches are in far more danger than they realize. If these churches fail it will but utterly and historically unprecedented.

The Evangelical Protestant Church in the US is in grave danger, we are not impacting the secular world with the Gospel as much as we are striving to copy it.   The work that Martin Luther started 500 years must continue today in returning the primacy of God and the work and love of Christ to his Church, and the true work of the Gospel: Sola Dei.

A huge religious marketplace has been set up in North America to meet the needs and fantasies of people just like us. There are conferences and gatherings custom-designed to give us the lift we need. There are books, videos, and seminars that promise to let us in on the Christian “secret” of whatever it is we feel is lacking in our life – financial security, well-behaved children, weight loss, sex, travel to holy sites, exciting worship, celebrity teachers. The people who promote these goods and services all smile a lot and are good-looking. They are obviously not bored.  It isn’t long before we’re standing in line to buy whatever is being offered. And because none of the purchases does what we had hoped for, or at least not for long, we’re soon back to buy another, and then another. The process is addicting. We become consumers of packaged spiritualities.” (Eugene Peterson, “Living the Resurrection”, pgs. 35-36)

About the Author: Van Y. Rue

I have witnessed and then ministered to over 100 Churches in variety of disasters.  My first was around 1981 when my thriving Presbyterian church first broke up over what age TULIP should be taught. They soon  plunged themselves into some cultish heresy with a PhD Pastor  who mixed the Shepherding heresy with Mormonism and Christian mysticism.  Shortly after I saw first-hand the Shepherding heresy sweep again through my Calvary Chapel and other churches, doing enormous harm.   Since that time around the US have seen a re-branded form of Shepherding thrive especially in Conservative Baptist and Neo-Calvinist circles. Most notably we attended Mars Hill here around 2005 and it was clear that Mars Hill was a cult and headed for disaster.  Mars Hill CEO Mark Driscoll had taken his re-branded Shepherding Heresy to a new level and added in many elements borrowed from cults… and at that time not one person seemed to notice.

I am a pretty ordinary guy, but with a surprising history of ministry over 40 years now that has been extremely diverse, and at times wonderfully fruitful.  My wife and I live near Seattle WA today.  My “tent-maker” job has been in optics, health-care, management and management consulting and teaching as an adjunct professor.  But I have been blessed with full-time stints in variety of ministries through the years, including serving as missionary, church planter, ministry starter, non-profit leader, sunday school teacher, homeless advocate, elder and even pastor (that is worth a story some day).  Currently I minister to victims of abuse and tackle the systemic false teaching that supports it.  I am married to terrific woman; we have no kids, but we have 2 dogs that we spoil.  All 4 of us spend as much time as we can here in the Pacific Northwest outdoors hiking, playing disc golf, cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing and at picnics in the many nearby parks and experiencing God through nature.  And most importantly, I love Jesus, not only for what he’s done for me, I find him to be pretty awesome to hang out with on a daily basis!  May all Glory be to the one true God and his son Jesus Christ, who has alone saved me from sin and death.
