Creating an Enemy: The Heresy of Dualism
(This is part of a growing series: Children of a Lesser God– Dominionism and Christian Nationalism Heresy Exposed )
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”Eph 6:12
There are different types of Dualism, the Ying and Yang of Chinese philosophy is a well-known but extreme version. Most of this heresy however is Mitigated Dualism like Manicheanism, Gnosticism and even Star Wars. In these version the forces of “good” or “light” or “right” are far stronger than those of “evil”, “darkness” or the “left”. Like Star Wars the “good” eventually prevails, but all version of Dualism no matter how you scale it or how quickly you hand the victory to the “good” are heretical because they are fighting at all. In Biblical Christianity the force and elements of evil and darkness, even Satan himself, weight a whopping zero on any scale compared to goodness and power of God.
Who is the church’s enemies today according to Dominionists? Franklin Graham’s tireless target of his attacks are “progressives”, Barr’s is “secular humanists”, according to Rick Wallis it’s “Democrats”, and for Warren Jeffries it’s frequently “liberals” or the ever useful “Left”. Most liberals have been burned together at the virtual stake recently under the disparaging united banner of “socialists” and “Marxists”, because after all, they are all the same thing. The enemy is always quietly understood although never specifically defined making this also Gnostic “secret knowledge”. All of these different words apply to the same evil group of people and really carry the same meaning no matter what specific label you pin on it: These people are not us!
Interestingly, none of these evil groups like liberals, progressives, socialists, or secular humanist’s Demon-crats or even Communists appear in my Bible, and neither do their alleged righteous “opposites” such as the Religious Right, right, Republican, capitalists or conservatives. This is very important. Additionally, by condemning any group or belief that Scripture fails to condemn, we are undermining the authority of Scripture and preaching an incompetent God that couldn’t see very well into the future. As Paul so eloquently warned us… ” that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written” 1 Cor 4:6.
ALL Human Economic and Political Systems Are in Theological Error
I have terrible news for some of you: ALL human economic, governmental and political systems are theologically flawed, even (the crowd gasps!) Capitalism. Capitalism parallels Darwin’s theory of “Survival of the Fittest”, and promotes greed and pride, as it depends on both for pulling yourself up with by your boot-straps. The Bible warns us… “See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.” Col 2:8. We will get more into why this is when we tackle the Tower of Babel in a future post.
I know someone is getting their Bibles out right now to prove Capitalism is endorsed by Scripture, okay, go ahead. The Bible references aspects of every economic system on the planet as an element of human life (a great post for another time) like it does murder and war, but a mention or allusion is never an endorsement. The Bible can’t endorse any form of political organization or economic system because none of them are eternal; They are ALL earthly and temporary philosophies based on the allocation of scarce resources. ALL Scarcity is a result of the Fall of Adam. Governing and human disunity entered the world at the Tower of Babel, and we see the solution for both only in the second coming of Christ. When Christ returns he will instantly eliminate scarcity. And thus He will instantly make every economic or political system and party on earth today… instantly irrelevant. That gives us more things to cheer about when Christ returns doesn’t it?
But it’s OK that these systems are in error, as they are only temporary. Our true salvation is Christ. As the Tower of Babel teaches us, no human or governmental system will ever help us to reach God, and for that we have Jesus. If we believe that the Bible endorsed any economic or governmental system we are building our Kingdom and not Christ’s, as God’s economy is not dependent on man’s.
Our Only Struggle is With Already Defeated Foes: Satan and Sin
Although we do struggle against Satan, we don’t fight or battle him, as he is a foe that is already fully defeated and stands condemned on his short stop on the way to his eternal punishment. Satan’s ONLY power on this earth is to deceive, and his primary target of that deception is Christ’s church. The world can never get worse, but the church because of Christ’s freedom can go from following Christ to following deception, as Paul predicts. “I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock” Acts 20:29. The only thing that can decline on this planet is yours and mine Christian faith, and that can only happen if we will it or believe in Satan’s deceptions. The world is in slavery to sin, but the church is not, they don’t have the choice or freedom we do to follow Christ or to follow our own ambition.
The devil and demons are one point where different branches of “hard” and “soft” Dominionists begin to separate, as Dominionists from the more Pentecostal side will also frequently give attention, power and focus to Satan that he doesn’t possess, which is just the same sick Dualism with a slightly different label. There are frequent stories of Dominionist Pentecostals casting demons out of Wal-Mart and hunting them down in grocery stores. Any crazy belief like this is heretical Dualism, because we have granted more power to any “enemy” than they possess in reality. The Devil is real, but his only power is to deceive, and the irony is if we give him too much attention its proof of our own deception. As Jesus said “the Truth will set you free”, we gain and have power over the enemy by simply refusing to believe his lies and wallking in the truth of Christ.
Our Focus On Politics Distorts the Character of God
Dominionists’ emphasis on politics is also heretical because politics and the definition of its terms change, but God doesn’t, “For I the Lord do not change…” Malachi 3:6a, (James 1:17, Heb 13:8). The word “conservative” by definition means unchanging, and yet in only two years the entire definition of what it means to be a conservative in the USA has been radically altered (the irony). We cannot build any public dialog using words that rapidly change without also distorting God’s character.
Any time a Christian leader disparages any broad based non-biblical group as threat to the church or Christian principles, it’s inescapable proof we have also fallen into the heresy of Dualism. Simply fighting this imaginary battle is ample evidence we have already lost the only one that matters: the truth.
There are some Dualists today who in addition to tireless condemning of progressives or liberals, also are obsessed with finding Satan in every circumstance and grocery store. An obsessive focus on Satan and his power thrills him, because its also inescapably the heresy of Dualism.
Dualism, and the resulting fear it incites are extremely useful political tools, so its resurrected almost every generation in some form. Every variety of Dualism elevates the enemy in power and stature, and therefore automatically brings the image, power and sovereignty of Jesus down. Adherents of Dualism, Dominionism and Christian Nationalism are Children of a Lesser God.
The Dominionist and Christian National constant attacks of the Left (or liberals, progressives, socialists, communists, secular humanists, demon-crats, etc) is inherently and inescapably drawn from a world view that both elevates this enemy to a greater position of power, and automatically justifies the unspoken proponent (ie, republican, conservative, right, etc) with a claim of righteousness. This of course applies the other way around, neither can the left attack the right on those same merits (specific beliefs however if they are explicitly biblical may be open to criticism, but even then it must be respectful). Anytime we elevate man (or even Satan) to grant them more power than they really have, this automatically and inescapably also denigrates and diminishes God. When we do to an individual its idolatry, when we do it collectively to or for a group, its also inescapably Dualism. It is also idolatry and legalism, for the group we implicitly claim is righteous. And anytime either group we condemn or implicitly promote is not expressly biblical, we inescapably create a righteousness apart from Christ. Dualism is all heretical and enormously damaging on many fronts.
Christian Nationalism is Turning What Should be our Mission Field, into a Battlefield
The heresy of Dominionism may get even worse. Evangelical Christianity embrace of Dominionistic ideals just turned into what should be truly our mission field… into a battlefield. Can we war against people we are claiming to save? How is that going? People are leaving the Christian church in America today in DROVES. The number of Christians in America has plummeted 13% in the last decade alone. At this rate in some of our lifetimes, countries like Iran will have a higher percent of Christians than the US does. This is a crisis, and NO ONE is paying attention. Like Esau who sold his birthright for a bowl of stew, we’ve traded the salvation of millions for a moment of political power.
It’s not us VERSUS them, it’s us FOR them (Credit to Mike Howerton and David Finch). Just as Christ came and died FOR us, we must do the same, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45. We cannot both be imitators of Christ (1 Peter 2:21) and remain at war with the non-Christian world.
If you trust in any political party or action, or economic system, in either your attack or your defense, you will surely shipwreck your faith and destroy any true ministry of the Church.
