Former Alabama Justice Roy Moore is back and he’s running AGAIN for the US Senate and this bodes poorly for the Evangelical Church. If you recall in Roy ran for the US Senate in 2018 until over 30 women (plus about 60 other witnesses) came forward to describe frightening behavior. The accusations at the time varied from creepy stalking to full blown sexual assault with many accounts bordering on Pedophilia. Nost of his victims were less than half Roy’s of age and as some were as young as 14! As a result Roy thankfully lost his Senate bid, but it was very close and he lost by only 2%.
We have had perverted politicians before but Roy’s sickness stands out because he uses God to justify his sin. Roy’s past history however transcends politics and it serves as a great lesson on how delusions of Dominionist theology can damagethe Church. Looking back we can see in the first ethical scandal Roy was involved in 16 years ago and how it reveals the problems with Dominionism theology.
Dominionists Work At Night
In 2000 Alabama Justice Roy Moore drug a 5000 lb block of granite with the 10 Commandments carved into the top, into center lobby of the Alabama Supreme Court building… in the middle of the night. Let this sink in for a moment. By doing this in the middle of the night Roy knew what he did was illegal and immoral… and yet did it anyway.
“While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but this hour and the power of darkness are yours.” Luke 22:53
Dominionists Alter Scripture
First, Roy’s version of the 10 Commandments was altered and shortened from that appear in scripture omitting large and crucial parts: Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you” Deut. 4:2, ironically in the chapter immediately before where the 10 commandments appear in Deutronomy chapter 5. It’s not truly God’s commandments if we edit some of them out, these are Roy’s commandments. Sadly it seems Roy didn’t actually READ the Commandments he so admires especially the part of 2nd he left out because it prohibits idolatry: “You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God” Deut 5:9
Dominionists Put the Old Testament Law Over Christ
Second, Roy claims that the… “Ten Commandments are the moral foundation” of U.S. law” and “we must first recognize the source from which all morality springs … recognize[ing] the sovereignty of God.” He added , (this monument marks) the beginning of the restoration of the moral foundation of law to our people, a return to the knowledge of God in our land”
No where in the Bible does it command us to “go Ye therefore into all the Court Houses, and there you shall carve into stone some of the Commandments I give you.”
Roy and His Cohorts Ignore Parts of the Bible They Don’t Like
He wasn’t alone, Roy was joined by 4000 people including James Dobson, Jerry Falwell Sr. and Alan Keys. They fought and lost a series of court battles over his rock and were ordered repeatedly to remove his monument from the building. It’s notable that Roy lost his case before his own Alabama court and in federal court by all unanimous verdicts. Roy and his cohort also lost all their appeals but still refused to remove the idol in defiance of court multiple orders. James Dobson and Jerry Falwell stood proudly by Roy’s side at protests and press conferences all of them ignored the biblical command to submit to government leaders.
“All of you must yield to the government rulers. No one rules unless God has given him the power to rule, and no one rules now without that power from God. So those who are against the government are really against what God has commanded. And they will bring punishment on themselves.” Rom 13:1-2
Third, If Roy really believed in the sovereignty of God as he claims, he would have obeyed the avalanche of court orders. In all of his court battles NOT ONE single judge in any jurisdiction voted in Roy’s, James Dobson, Jerry Falwell Sr. favor. In 2003 Roy was removed UNANIMOUSLY from the court by the Alabama Judicial Inquiry Commission for flagrantly violating the law, and in 2004 his monument was finally removed as well. But he didn’t learn as In 2013 a re-elected Judge Roy was suspended again for 6 ETHICAL violations, and again he was going to be removed but he resigned before they could vote.
In Roy’s World alone Women Have to Be Pure
Fourth, Its even worse than it looks because Roy pursued young girls because of their alleged “purity” while simultaneously attempting to defile them. This denies the work and true purity that we can find only in Christ himself. This also reveals the false and misogynistic belief that the purity only applies to women and not to men.
The 10 Commandments of Evangelical Dominionism
We see in Roy’s sad story the heart of why Dominionism is a heresy as a subtle form of legalism and here are the key takeaways from the sad saga or Roy Moore:
- Obsession, and even idolatry of the Old Testament law and rules. Domionists are defined frequently by what they are primarily against, and most often cite Old Testament laws to make their case,
- Men are excluding from the requirements of acting pure, women are the primary source of unrighteousness.
- No matter how terrible you are, or what you do, if you are Dominionist you can count on other scoundrels to run to your side.
- Selective Use of Scripture. They favor certain Bible passages and yet freely and easily ignore all of them that contradict their agenda.
- Dominionists will both commit and tolerate horrible sin to justify their small acts of righteousness.
- There is a undying sense of being in a “battle” and facing “persecution” from their “enemies”
- Dominionists believe they are above the rule of law, even in defiance of Scripture
- Roy and other legalsts often don’t live up to their own moral code. They easily condemn others while simultaneously committing atrocious sins even bordering on pedophilia.
- They don’t really talk much about Jesus, or his victory over sin and death. But especially they don’t talk about how you and I can find forgiveness of sins.
- Dominionists view the law and government, not Christ, as the primary hope of righteousness. They ignore the saving power and righteousness of Christ. Only Jesus can bring purity; only through Christ can the 10 commandments have any value.
What Roy Moore Teaches us About Evangelical Domionism
All true Christians are saved only by the Grace of Christ. But the difference between true Christians and Domionists is we acknowledge our utter dependency on the Cross as the only antidote for sin. It should not surprise any true Christ Follower that the Law cannot save us, and cannot bring us righteousness.
“Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin” Rom 8:1-4
Selective morality is no morality at all. Dominionists like Roy Moore, Jerry Falwell and James Dobson in only defending the parts of the Bible they select and choose, have utterly usurped God and Christ as the head of the Church, and denied that salvation is through Christ alone.
It’s a great story. We here first hand the hierocracy of Dominionist leaders who claim to uphold morality, but utterly ignore it in their daily lives. We see Dominionist leaders who claim to uphold and even fight for Scripture, but they conveniently ignore those scripture that counter their beliefs and actions.
Things Jesus never said: “go ye therefore into all the nations, drag with you large stones that contain some parts of the 10 commandments, and sneak them into public buildings in the dark of night”
